Klimadao: how retirement certificates work
KlimaDAO is a community working on blockchain infrastructure for carbon markets. Through the related Klima Protocol on Base, buyers retire eligible carbon credits and receive publicly verifiable proof via Carbonmark. A completed retirement permanently consumes the credit’s environmental claim and does not provide a transferable credit.
Buyer terms on Base
| Retirement detail | Applicable terms |
|---|---|
| Network | Base, for the newer Klima Protocol. |
| Credit selection | Supported carbon classes, vintages, and methodologies. |
| Carbon pricing and settlement | Carbon is priced in kVCM, and protocol carbon transactions settle in kVCM. |
| Execution terms | Quoted in real time and updated with observable supply and retirement activity. |
| Settlement finality | Onchain, upon successful execution. |
| Retirement proof | A publicly verifiable proof-of-retirement certificate via Carbonmark. |
| Beneficiary details | Optional details, such as a beneficiary name and the purpose of retirement. |
| After execution | Retirement is irreversible, and refunds are not possible. |
How the certificate relates to the credit
The credit carries an environmental claim; retirement consumes that claim permanently. The certificate available through Carbonmark provides proof of retirement, and the protocol records activity on a public blockchain from credit intake through retirement.
A real-time quote describes execution terms for a retirement. Settlement becomes final onchain when execution succeeds. The certificate concerns the completed retirement, so a quote alone does not establish that credits have been retired.
Why registry evidence can differ
An external registry certificate does not accompany every retirement recorded through Carbonmark. Credits such as CMARK can originate natively onchain, while credits such as UCR may have been permanently removed from registries before the protocol handles them.
Eligibility and token boundaries
The newer protocol handles eligible credits for retirement. Carbon taken into the protocol is not made available to buyers for withdrawal, resale, or secondary trading. Holding or locking kVCM or K2 gives no ownership claim on that carbon and no redemption right over it.
The application restricts access in some jurisdictions and uses zkMe to enforce jurisdictional eligibility at the point of access under applicable sanctions, AML, and platform policies.
